From the PTSA President Laura Mapes:
THE LATEST ROAR HAPPENINGS FROM PTSA
ROAR! ROAR! ROAR!
Hello, Everyone! Welcome to the 2016-2017 school year at Moore Middle School. My name is Laura Mapes. I am the PTSA President — Parents, Teachers, Students Association! If you haven’t guessed, I am super excited to be a part of this most prestigious group!
A little about myself: I have three children, triplets — two boys, and a girl — in Eighth Grade. Their names are Liam, Tatum, and Shane. My husband Steve is a Superior Court Judge and works in the San Bernardino Juvenile Division. While my children attended Mariposa Elementary, I was very involved in the PTA, which included a two-year term as PTA President, and now this is my second term as PTSA President of Moore Middle School.
This year marks the 50th Birthday for Moore Middle School. On September 22, we are going to have a celebration! I hope to see you all there!
A breakfast was sponsored by the PTSA the first week of school. Our hospitality committee — Melanie Jump, and Dawn McNeil — ensured a beautiful, tasty, and wonderful breakfast was made available for our teachers and staff. These wonderful ladies are also responsible for our traditional End-of-the-Year Luncheon for our teachers!
There are many opportunities for parents to be involved at Moore Middle School. PTSA will have its annual membership drive and we hope to have more parents, teachers, and students than ever join our wonderful group! Remember, the “S” in PTSA stands for students. We hope students will come to our meetings and volunteer their services also. With each membership purchased, you will receive a 50th Anniversary bumper sticker and all student members will receive a 50th Anniversary carabiner to hold their I.D. Our meetings are the second Tuesday of the month at 6 p.m. Denise Jury is the parent who is in charge of our membership. You will notice a little humor on this year’s membership envelope. We would love to have to part of our PTSA. By becoming a member of PTSA and placing your email address on the envelope, you will receive important information and volunteer opportunities!
Historically, we've yielded about 250 PTSA members per year. Our school has 1,100 students so we think we could get a few more PTSA members. At the Back-To-School Nights, I announced to everyone that Mr. Cortz would do anything for our school -- his head shaved by students, duck-taped to a wall, and ice water thrown at him -- but he would not dance at lunchtime with the students. So, with that said, I surpirse-challenged Mr. Cortz that if PTSA were to obtain 500 PTSA members, would he then learn to dance -- ne-ne, dab, sprinkler, cabbage patch, and the electric slide? He resoundingly accepted with a BIG YES! As of this date, we have acquired 300 members. Please, please help us reach our goal so we can alleviate the pain Mr. Cortz must feel at weddings and dances!!!!!
PTSA also sponsors a “Coffee with Cortz”. In certain months, on a Friday morning, 9 a.m., Mr. Cortz will speak to parents of the goings-on at campus and will have wonderful speakers to address the issues facing our students and parents. This is your opportunity to know our great principal and express any comments or concerns you have about our school. The PTSA promises to provide coffee, juice, and yummy goodies at this morning meeting. Many thanks to our chairpersons, Lisa Carlson and Harpal Khera, wonderful parents who bring a homey atmosphere to Coffee with Cortz.
Last year, the Moore PTSA was able to join other groups in purchasing a brand new stage curtain for the multi-purpose room! The old curtain was 35 years old! We also restocked the emergency backpacks in all classrooms, participated in the campus beautification, ensured a back-to-school packet be mailed to every home, and bought new books for the library!
I also want to make known ALL THE WONDERFUL people who are on Moore’s PTSA Board! They are amazing, supportive, and work endlessly to make sure the magnify their positions. Please take time to look at our 2016-2017 List of PTSA Board members, and offer your support where and when needed.
Our Reflections theme this year is exciting! “What is Your Story?” Entry forms are available in the office. Please encourage your children to apply to any of the six areas offered. Kim Martinez is our chairperson and ensures our Reflections will be a great success. Entries are due Monday, September 26, 2016.
